It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year…Lol

It’s Back to School Season

This is the time of year is filled with so many mixed emotions for parents and students. Some parents are excited to send their kids off after a busy summer season. Others are feeling anxious and sad that their baby is all grown up now and is stepping into a new phase of life. The reality is sinking in that they are growing into little humans who are not needing us as much as they once did. And for many parents, that’s a sad feeling. We know that that is ultimately the plan, to prepare them for when they have to venture out into the world; but it doesn’t get any easier when that time has come. We must let them go and pray that we equipped them well with what they need to face this world. The bible says in Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

I am that emotional mom who cries over the new milestones in my children’s lives. No matter how many “back to school seasons” I’ve been through, it’s a constant reminder that they are growing up and there is nothing I can do to stop or slow it down. So I have held that scripture close to my heart and making sure that I raise them according to God’s word and trust that he will see them through now and beyond. Our youngest one has started Kindergarten this year and as I was preparing his enrollment paperwork, the waterworks turned on. I thought that I had mentally prepared myself for it, but nope. The same thing happened when it was his first day of Pre-K. It’s a scary world out there and we want to guard our kids from EVERYTHING, but the reality is that we can’t.

However, our kids on the hand are usually excited to go back to school. They want to wear their new clothes and backpacks. Show off their new sneakers, haircuts and hairdos, then after a few days or weeks the excitement wears off and it’s back to “ I don’t want to get up, I’m still tired.” Or “ can I just stay home just for today, I don’t feel like going to school.” In those moments that’s when parent mode kicks in and we have to remind them the value of education and why it’s important to follow through on our commitments.

No matter how old our kids get they are still going to need us. Yes, they may be less dependent upon us but they will still need us. Now that we are parents, we depend on our own parents less but we are all the more dependent on our Heavenly Father. He is there by his Holy Spirit to lead us and to guide us through everything that we go through in this life and that is such a blessing. He says in his word that he will never leave us nor forsake us and that is something that we can count on when we are facing different seasons in our lives. As we experience this new season, let’s go into it confidently knowing that God will see us and our kids through this new school year.

Wow, I don’t know if it’s just me but boy is time passing by so quickly. I can hardly believe that almost half the year is already gone. We will soon be entering into a new season, Summer. Many people look forward to the Summer because of all the things that come along with it. For example, the warm/hot weather, school’s out, vacations, grilling and the list can go on and on and on. Some people (the diligent ones, who kept their New Year resolutions.) really look forward to this time to show off all of their hard work in the winter/colder months. They ate right, worked out when they didn’t feel like it. All because they had a goal/vision. They made a decision, made a plan (most likely than not, wrote it down somewhere) prepared for it and took action day by day, week by week, month by month. And now they have the chance to reap what they have sown.

This, to me, is reminiscent of our walk as a Christian. We have many different seasons in our own life. We have the “Summers” where its sunshine most of the time, great times of laughter, joy, happiness, creating memorable moments. We all love those times and that season. Then we have the “Falls” where we have a transition and shift in life where the laughter isn’t so loud and full. It’s not as consistent as they used to be. You have some good day and some bad days; however, we can still manage and don’t feel to overwhelmed by the obvious changes that is happening around us. Perhaps, someone you used to spend lots of time with must relocate for work or school. Or maybe you’ve had a falling out with a relative. These are not events that we would want to happen, but it’s sometimes something that needs to be.

Then we go in the “Winters”, where we find ourselves in a place the days aren’t as bright. They are shorter and shorter. You may find this season is the hardest because you feel like you’ve been left out in the cold by yourself. The one(s) you used to rely on or was close with, have abandoned you and you feel like you have no one to turn to or no where to go. Or, maybe you find yourself in a very bad situation, where you are tested in everyway imaginable all at once, like emotionally, mentally, physically, financially, spiritually, relationally. It’s almost like you can’t catch a break. It’s a storm after another after another. You may feel like you’ll never get out of this cold dark place. But I’m here to remind and encourage you that this season in your life will not last always.

We also have “Springs” in life, where we are starting to see a glimmer of hope, a glimpse of change, relief, help, sunshine on the horizon. Things aren’t how they once were or how we would like for them to be quite yet, but darkness is starting to go away, the loneliness is creeping out. There are still some storms, but these storms are less intense. You’re starting to see the purpose behind these rainstorms. That they are here to wash away the residue and the remnants of what used to be. There’s a cleansing that is taking place and a newness that is coming forth. Just like in the regular spring season, in order to see the beautiful foliage and flowers that so many people appreciate, there first must be rain. There first must be a digging up of the old soil, new soil and new seeds must be carefully planted, nurtured and nourished to see the beauty that comes up afterward.

Just know that we all experience this and you’re not alone. We all have to go and grow these seasons. Some seasons may be longer than others but know that God has a plan for you. Know that even when you are in the “Winter” season of your life that Ps 30:5 reads in part “…weeping may remain for night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.” Also, read these scriptures for more encouragement in the Lord, Ps 34:15, 17-22.

In closing, we tend to look forward to the “Summers” which is ok. But let us not lose sight of the other inevitable seasons we must face. Let our “workouts” be reading and studying God’s Word, so that we will be prepared for the what’s ahead. Refer to Eph 6:10-18. Let us seek God in prayer, asking him for his Holy Spirit to lead us. In “Falls”, don’t be discouraged, by those who leave or disappoint or even betray you. Many people left Jesus’s ministry and Judas betrayed Him. Refer to Jn 6:66, 70-71. Think of “Springs” of renewal, of restoration. This is where Jesus made you new. Read 2 Cor 5:17. Jesus loves you and nothing that you go through is in vain. So let up embrace Him and His process and become yielded vessels that he may work through us. Do so will result in the beautiful flowers that will come forth after the rain.

Be blessed.

Isn’t that some great news? Jesus is risen.

It’s that time of year again when we, as believers, are reminded of what our wonderful Lord and Savior did for us all on the cross. However, the world, celebrates this occasion in a different manner. This is the time that they go shopping for nice pastel-colored outfits and get all dolled up to take pictures and maybe go to church. For some, it’s the only time of the year that they may go to church. Perhaps, it’s because they are being dragged to church by a grandparent or parents, or maybe it’s just been the tradition or thing to on Easter Sunday. Others celebrate this occasion by painting eggs and doing easter egg hunts and glamourizing a white bunny. I never quite understood how a little white bunny became the focus of this marvelous event. But I’m not surprised. Because the devil has been working hard for a long time to deceive and to deviate the focus of believers away from Christ.

We all know the story of Adam and Eve and how they ended up getting kicked out of the Garden of Eden due to their sin and disobedience to God. The serpent deceived Eve, which led to Adam going against what God had told him (See, the devil has been up to his schemes from the very beginning). From that point on sin was introduced into the world and that became our natural nature. We were destined to death and to go to hell, and to be separated for God eternally. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus or Lord.” Romans 6:23. However, the story doesn’t end there. We have the Good News.

God, our Father, is a loving God. He created us all to glorify him and to have a deep, intimate, fulfilling relationship with him. He wants us to be with him forever. However, because of sin and our natural desire to give into the ways of this world and to our wicked flesh, he knew we could not save ourselves or do anything in our own power that would lead us to eternal life with him. So, he sent his Son to take our place and die for our sins. We see this in John 3:16-18 NIV; “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his son in to the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever, believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.” It doesn’t get any clearer than that, my brothers and sisters. God sent Jesus to save us and if we believe in the matchless name of Jesus Christ, we will not be condemned, but we will have eternal life with him.

Now, God sent Jesus to be born of a virgin, to be born of the flesh as we are. He grew up, became a man and had been tempted by the devil in every which way that we are today so that he could truly understand the things that we go through, but he did not sin. He can help up through our own struggles because he’s been through it and we also will be able to overcome. Refer to Hebrews 4:15-16 CEV “ Jesus understands every weakness of ours, because he was tempted in every way that we are. But he did not sin! So whenever we are in need, we should come bravely before the throne of our merciful God. There we will be treated with undeserved kindness, and we will find help.”

Jesus came to earth and laid down his life and took on the sins of the world so that we could be reconciled with God the Father. He died and rose again on the 3rd day. He has conquered over the fear of death and death no longer has its sting. Refer to Hebrews 2:14—18 NIV and 1 Cor. 15:55-57. By accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we have the confidence and assurance that we will be with him for eternity when we die. Because of what Jesus did on the cross, we don’t have to be afraid of death. Death no longer has power over us because we know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, see 2 Cor. 5:8.

I encourage you to go read for yourself in the Holy Bible of what Jesus had done for us all. One of the accounts is in the book of Matthew, read chapters 26-28. So all in all, what is this holiday all about? Why do we as believers observe Resurrection Sunday? We do so because it is the very basis of what we believe. In his selfless act of love and ultimate sacrifice, he gifted us, salvation. A precious gift we couldn’t afford to pay. Be reminded that Jesus is Lord, he died on the cross for our sins. He ransomed us with his blood that was shed, He overcame death through his resurrection, and it no longer has its sting over us and we no longer have to fear dying because, if we accepted him as our Lord and Savior, we will be with him for eternity.

As always, be blessed.

It’s almost a universal principle that having a car in high school makes you popular. I didn’t have one, but one of my best friends did. I still remember the day I first laid my eyes on it. It was an older car but it looked impeccable. From the new coat of paint to the aftermarket rims, his car was a sight for the sore eyes of high school kids who were tired of taking the bus. After the final bell rang on one fateful day, my friends and I piled into his car and rolled down the windows in eager expectation. Unfortunately for us, our ride that day was a short one.

We didn’t make it to the end of the block before the car came to a sputtering halt. As dark smoke plumed from the hood, we slowly rolled our windows back up knowing that the fun was over. In disbelief, my friend got out of the car and kicked the front tire in frustration. He had bought a lemon. With little to offer in the way of comfort, the rest of us slowly made our way to the bus stop, digging in our pockets for bus tokens.

The idea of conversion is something that has traditionally confounded people. Is the change we see in ourselves as Christians due to white knuckled adherence to a new pattern of behavior? Was the untangling of our sinful mess done of our own accord? Those who have adopted this line of thinking have ultimately been left in patterns of failure and bitterness. The truth is that to simply try harder is no different than to put a new paint job on a 1980 Ford Fiesta…you'll inevitably be left stranded on the side of the highway.

As we look to scripture, we’re able to gain a clearer understanding. In the third chapter of the Gospel of John, Jesus, in the midst of a conversation with Nicodemus says, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the Kingdom of God” (John 3:3). What a profound statement. Christ makes clear that in order to enter the kingdom, we don’t simply make changes to who we are, we are utterly different in kind. In this newly presented paradigm, our first birth, and all that came along with it, are essentially rubbish. This statement likely left the Pharisee Nicodemus dumbfounded…

The response to such a proclamation is predictable though…How? (John 3:4)

Nothing short of a gracious gift of God. Paul writes in Romans 3:23-24, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.” To be justified, or declared righteous, is not an act of sheer willpower or merit, it is an act of God alone. Nicodemus placed his religious hope in his lineage and law keeping. Christ turned his world upside down by informing him that none of that was enough. For us to claim any credit for being born again not only posits an unearned contribution on our end, it diminishes the very nature of God.

We are not sinners remodeled, we are new creatures altogether (2 Cor 5:17) and temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 6:19) who are justified and continually sanctified by the unearned grace of God. Living in the humility this knowledge produces will rightfully lead to the truthful understanding of who we are, and more importantly, who God is.

That time has rolled around again, New Year’s. This time of year almost always has everyone thinking about all the new things they’re going to do or try. We’re all professing these audacious goals of learning a new language or eating clean/healthier, exercising or traveling more, quit smoking (cold turkey), spend more time with loved ones or even reading more etc, etc, ect. I know I’m definitely guilty of several of these resolutions. I’ll probably get a couple weeks into January and then, boom, I quit. Life happens, and I get distracted and allow those tiny setbacks to hold me back from what I had set out to do in the upcoming year. So many of us go through this very cycle, but rarely do we do the deep dive to examine what is truly at the root of us not accomplishing our goals.

Perhaps the is the problem right there. We are trying to accomplish “Our” goals. Where is God in this process? Very seldom are our resolutions ones that include God. I’m not saying that there is something wrong with having goals; just that we shouldn’t lose sight of who our source is and where we ought to go to draw our strength from which will ultimately allow us to actually realize those goals. Psalm 28:8 reads “The Lord is the strength of his people, a fortress of salvation for is anointed one.” NIV. I believe we should always have a plan for every aspect of our life if we plan on being successful in that area. I’m sure you’ve heard of the saying “Failure to plan, is a plan to fail.” I would venture to say that we should take it a step further and write down our goals. Habukuk 2:2 read in part “…Write the vision, and make it plain upon tablets, that he may run who readth it.” KJV.

We all have been put here on earth for a purpose. The main purpose is to Glorify the One and True Living God. Practically, we do that by the way we chose to live our life daily. Sometimes we try to plan out our whole lives and then get frustrated when things aren’t going according to our timetable. Have we lost sight of what God said in Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,“ declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” NIV. Now, granted this was a message was sent to the elders and priests who were exiled from Jerusalem through the prophet, Jeremiah. Nonetheless, I believe that just as God had a plan for them, He has a plan for us.

When we set resolutions, I think another oversight on our part is that it isn’t enough to just say and write down what we want to achieve for the New Year. We must actually DO IT. There’s a level of sacrifice that it’s going to be necessary to obtain/realize what we want. We can’t remain the same if we want new life experiences. We have to be willing to give up those old habits in order to make room for the new ones. Surrendering ourselves as a living sacrifice is how we’ll be able to get there. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 we read, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here!” As you’ve heard before, “Old habits die hard”. It’s true, however, it’s unrealistic for us to think that we can have/maintain the new things in our lives while operating under the old distorted mindsets and wicked ways we once had.

The great news is that Jesus is the way to a new, joyous and prosperous life. He is the answer to all of life’s questions. Putting God first is the key to true success and fulfillment. Refer to Matthew 6:33, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need.” I thank God for sending His son, Jesus who chose to lay down is life as a sacrifice for you and me. Without him, I was destined to spend eternity without him. I invited Him into my life to transform me and you can do the same. The gift of salvation can only come from accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior. My suggestion for this New Year is to get those priorities in line and become a new creation in Christ, like Paul in Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ live in me. The life in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

Be blessed, may this upcoming New Year be brighter than the last and most importantly may the love of Jesus Christ lead you into becoming a New You.

It’s that time of year again. The Christmas season is upon us and the big day is drawing near. At this point, you can’t go down a street without seeing homes lit up and inflatable reindeer on front lawns. Neighborhood streets are crowded with Amazon delivery trucks as far as the eye can see. But what does this season mean for us as the church? As we are in the season of Advent, it is important for us as believers to reflect on the miracle of the birth of Christ in context. We must ask ourselves a simple question…Why did Christ come?

One of my favorite worship songs has always been In Christ Alone. The lyrics are theologically rich and God-honoring. The hymn has understandably become a staple in many churches across the world. In 2013 though, there was some controversy surrounding the song. The Presbyterian Church U.S.A. (PCUSA), seeing how popular the hymn was, desired to include it in their hymnal. There was one problem, they wanted to change the lyrics. The second verse included the line, “Til on that cross as Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied.” The PCUSA Hymnal Committee decided that they would only include the hymn if they would be able to change the lyrics to “Til on that cross as Jesus died, the love of God was magnified.” (Original lyrics below)

"In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save
'Til on that cross as Jesus died
The wrath of God was satisfied
For every sin on Him was laid
Here in the death of Christ I live, I live"

Thankfully the writers of the song, Stuart Townend and Keith Getty, denied the request and kept the original lyrics thus keeping the hymn out of the PCUSA Hymnal. It begs the question though…Why would PCUSA want the lyrics changed? The culture in which we live shutters at the thought of “wrath”. It’s an abrasive term that connotes pain and suffering. It doesn’t mingle well with the concept of a socially accepting, tolerant, and “loving” God who allows people to wantonly live out their base desires. Sadly, even churches, in hopes of being inclusive, have given into this way of thinking.

We must hold fast to the truth. It was God’s perfect holiness (1 Sam 2:2) and wrath (Rom 1:18), in harmony with His love (John 3:16) that deemed the incarnation of Christ necessary. Christ came, that to the glory of God, He would be our substitute. He and only He, could satisfy the wrath of a Holy God and impute to us His righteousness. This Advent season, we should know that the Word became flesh for a reason…and it wasn’t for bellies full of ham and hanging mistletoe. May we celebrate the birth of our Lord in the fullness of this rich understanding.

So many of us go through this life wondering who we really are and what our identity is. This may take place in different stages of life. As kids, we have big and colorful imaginations where we would say. If we were asked as a child “What you do want to be?”, we probably said a superhero, or a princess, or cowboy, or pretty much anything that was bigger than life. Why? Because we BELIEVED we could be ANYTHING. This phase is before the influences of the world has a chance to affect our thoughts and perceptions of ourselves.

As adolescents, we perhaps have more realistic views and thoughts of who /what we want to be. Our answers to that question is more likely to be a basketball player or some sort of an athlete or even a baker. We might even say want to do whatever our parent’s profession is. Or nowadays, a gamer or a youtuber…lol. We begin to identify or gravitate towards more towards our interests/hobbies.

As preteens and teens, we’re questioning everything. The world’s influences have more of an impact on us and how we see ourselves. The doubt creeps in and we begin to realize that the world doesn’t really revolve around us, despite what mom says. We have television and social media, for example, that is constantly promoting their portrayal of what’s acceptable. We must be careful with what we watch and with what we listen to. The bible talks about protecting our eye and ear gates. What or who we listen to (as well as what/who we watch) makes an impression on us, whether we realize it or not. It affects how we think, it affects how we act and what we say. Most importantly, it affects our heart.

This is why it is imperative that we stay rooted in God’s Word. Refer to Proverbs 4:20-23 “My son, pay attention to what I say: turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart: for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

This world is controlled by the enemy and functions contrary to the Kingdom of God. So we mustn't allow ourselves to be fooled by what we see here to be our standard of living. We must remember Who we are to Whom we belong. There is no need to go search the world for you to discover who you are. I'm here to remind you that:

YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD. See verses 1 John 3:1, Romans 8:16,Galatians 3:26, John 1:12, Romans 8:14, 2 Corinthians 6:18, Ephesians 1:5 just to name a few. YOU ARE LOVED, See verses John 3:16, Romans 5:8, Romans 8:35-39, Psalms 36:5-7, Ephesians 2:4-5, Romans 5:5 just to name a few. YOU WERE MADE IN THE IMAGE OF GOD. See Genesis 1:26-27 How wonderful is that? That the creator of the universe, the one who created all things seen and unseen; made us in His own image. We all know that God created the whole world by speaking it all into existence. In the first chapter in Genesis you will see repeatedly where it says "And God said", "Let there be..." "And it was so". Whatever God wanted there to be, it was, because He spoke it.

Now if you look at the next 2nd chapter in Genesis verse 7, you'll see it reads " Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and the man became a living being." God spoke the whole world into existence, but took his time to form you and breath life into you. Do you not see how profound that is? His spirit is within us. He wants us to be and have a connection with Him. Why? Because He loves us, because he's a good Father.

So be confident in knowing, you are loved, you are purposed to be here, you are child of the Almighty God and that He formed you in His own image. THIS is who you are. There isn't ANYTHING that this world can offer you that is more powerful than that.

God bless you :-)

Have you ever heard of the saying/acronym “YOLO’? Which stands for “You Only Live Once”, as to say live your life on your own terms. How you want, when you want, being unapologetic and just going after any and everything you want out of life.

Well, it all “sounds good” but can be a quite dangerous way to live one’s life. Throwing caution to the wind and not having any regard for the potential consequences of living one’s life this way is, careless to say the least. This is the worldly way of living. Thinking and acting this way appeals to the flesh, which is contrary to God’s Word. We see this in 1 John 2:16 “For everything in the world-the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life- comes not from the Father but from the world.” NIV

As a believer, we seek guidance, direction, leading and teaching for our daily living from the scriptures in the Holy Bible. Here’s another acronym you may or may not be familiar with “BIBLE”; which stands for Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. All that we need is right there in the bible. God gave us the standards and the guidelines of how we should be here on earth. For those who may still be a bit confused as to what God’s will is for us, here’s one example in Rom 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will. NIV

It is so easy for us to be distracted and pulled in to what this world has to “offer”. This world says you’re not good enough, smart enough, tall enough, pretty/handsome enough, blah, blah, blah… All of these things are lies from the enemy. Is it really offering us anything of true substance or is it all just temporary and short lived satisfaction? The world has the glitz of glamour that appears to be able to fill the void that we all have experienced one way or another. We all have insecurities that we try to hide, avoid, deny overcompensate for. But, what most will find (if not all) is that no matter what one tries to do to combat those lies fed to us by the enemy, we will still remain unfulfilled. The reason this is is because the only one who can truly complete us and offer the love we all so desire is, Jesus Christ.

I started this blog by saying we don’t only live once, but twice. The first life we live will be here on Earth. But the second will be determined by what we do here and how we choose to live our lives. The life we live here is finite. The one we will live after, is eternal. Our destination after we leave this life will either be in eternity with God our Father, The One and ONLY God, and with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ or to be absent from God and be in Hell for eternity.

One of the most well-known verses in the bible whether you’re a believer or not is, John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” See, we all have the opportunity to live eternally with God. All we need to do is just Believe in Jesus. We don’t have to work for it, we don’t have to earn it, we don’t have to be the most perfect person in the world. We just need to believe in Jesus, who He is and what He came to do for us all. Refer to Romans 10 9-10 “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord” and believe in your hear that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with you heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.”

Our eternal salvation is a gift that all we need to do is accept it. My prayer for you is that you know that you are loved. You were created in the very image of God. He knows you better than anyone else ever will. He knew you before you were even in your mother’s womb. He has a great purpose and plan for your life. So don’t believe the lies and doubt that the enemy tries to plant in your mind. Remember to whom you belong, an AMAZING God who loved you SO much that He sent His Only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for your sins so that if you would only believe in His Son, Accept Him as your personal Lord and Savior, that he rose again that when we leave this world, we will live again with in Him in eternity.

Easter Sunday is the most significant day on the liturgical calendar for a Christian. It is the culmination of an entire week focused on the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christians around the world join together to worship and celebrate the risen Lord and their adoption into the family of God. All too often though, the festivities of Easter are followed by an adrenaline dump and a sense of malaise for believers. For most churches, attendance is traditionally low the week after Easter. We must ask ourselves if this is appropriate. Is there biblical precedent for this waxing and waning? How did the disciples carry on after the resurrection?

The first Easter for the disciples was not necessarily the end of something, it was the beginning. Acts 1:3 show us that, after the resurrection, it was another 40 days until Christ gave the Great Commission and ascended into heaven. From all accounts, the passion of the disciples only grew from that point on. It is important to note that the disciples, before spreading out to different areas of the world, only knew Jesus for 3-4 years. That short time left an indelible mark on these men. Their zealous impact for the Kingdom was realized in the years and decades after the resurrection and ascension, not before it.

What exactly did the future hold for the disciples? History offers us some insight. According to historical record, the apostle James was beheaded in 44 AD under the authority of King Agrippa and was the first recorded martyred apostle (~10 years of ministry). Simon Peter died a martyr’s death between 64-68 AD under the persecution of Emperor Nero (>30 years of ministry). The apostle John died in 100-105 AD after being exiled to the Isle of Patmos and finally traveling to Ephesus after his release (~70 years of ministry). The disciples went on to lead ministries that lasted decades in most cases. Suffice it to say there was no shortage of fervency among the disciples after the first Easter. They certainly did not rest on the laurels of the previous 3 years. They traversed the globe by land and sea to share the gospel of Christ, and often met gruesome ends because of it.

What kind of an effect has Easter had on us? It’s so common for us to treat Easter like any other holiday, forgetting the historical event that it commemorates. The encounters Christ had with those during his life and after His resurrection effectuated meaningful change that had the power to endure. The modern day “church fatigue,” that most seem to experience is more likely the product of buying into a secular understanding of Easter. A biblical understanding produces something very different in the life of a believer. This year, may we line ourselves up with Romans 12:11, so that the typical fatigue we have grown so accustomed to would be replaced by an irrepressible excitement, fervor, and zeal to serve our Lord.

The first example of a mother in the bible is, Eve.

Adam, created from dust, was later given a partner from the other half of his rib. Genesis 3:20 states, "The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living."

In the garden, Eve and Adam lived amongst each other and were given the permission to "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it." Genesis 1:28.

We see the example of being fruitful and multiplying throughout the bible with mothers birthing children born who later became great leaders. One great leader that we have come to know is King Solomon who asked the Lord for wisdom.

Solomon went on to write Proverbs and later speaks about how a woman should carry herself in Proverbs 31. This example of the Proverbs 31 woman is still used today especially when it comes to raising a family.

Proverbs 31:26 speaks about the characteristics of a mother’s speech and how it should be. "She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue."

God also instructed mothers to take care of children in Deuteronomy 6:6–7, which further speaks about setting an example for children, "And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise."

Mothers should be honored for raising children who will one day raise their own children and the generations to come. Mother’s Day is a day where we celebrate mothers who lead and set biblical examples for us to follow. These women have given us a firm foundation that has followed us into adulthood and has helped lead us on the path to Christ. This leadership has continued to inspire girls who later become mothers and is inspiring those of us who want to become mothers in the future.
